14 LinkedIn Hacks for Pro-level Business Networking

LinkedIn –the professional social network. LinkedIn is a social media platform that has been specially designed for professional and business networking.

40% of LinkedIn users log in daily. LinkedIn has at-least 600 million of which around 25% are in the United States alone.

Professionals use LinkedIn to increase their visibility to recruiters, to share professional experiences and thoughts. Companies use LinkedIn to Connect with potential recruits and for finding new leads.

All networks work on “Networking”, pretty obvious, right? On that note, here are some tips and tricks to take your LinkedIn game to epic levels.

1. Utilize Profile Settings To The Maximum

LinkedIn provides a lot of profile settings which when used correctly will work wonders and provide a considerable boost to the size of your network.

1.1 Updated and professional profile Image

Profiles with a photo have 14 times more views than a profile with a default image. Whereas a profile with a professional photograph will have 21 times more profile views. See the difference yet?

Using a professional photograph will increase your visibility considerably. Remember to smile while you are getting photographed, since a smile makes people feel at ease. NO Sunglasses. Use a profile picture in which you are not wearing sunglasses. You(or your profile image) need to look people into the eye. This conveys that you are confident and have nothing to hide.

A profile image will be the first impression, make it count.

1.2 Using Cover Photo To The Maximum

When you open someone’s profile on LinkedIn, you can see their cover photo in the center and profile Image in the left-hand corner. A cover image covers more area and is more eye-catching than the profile image itself. A default cover image conveys zero information about you or your business.

So, how would you use a cover photo to your advantage?

  1. Use a cover photo to display your skills, it will make it easier for the recruiters as they do not need to scroll down to check them out.
  2. If you are an HR then you could list out current openings or your email-id

If you are a company then you could use the cover photo to display a list of your core-competencies, area of operation and the value you can add to a customer’s business.

1.3 Profile Title and Summary

Open your profile and click the pencil button in the top right-hand corner, adjacent to your profile photo. You can now edit a profile title and a summary to your profile. The summary is basically the summary of your profile. So feel free to add certifications, test results, work experience, volunteering experience.

The Title is where you describe what you are or what you are looking for. Use this space to describe yourself. Write about your current work profile or the profile you want to switch to.

Some people like to say that they are actively looking for a job in a certain field and at a certain location. Some HR’s like to write about their latest recruitment campaign.

Use | (pipe symbol, Shift +\) to add distinct keywords.

1.4 Endorsements and Recommendations

These features on LinkedIn are my favorite. Endorsements allow for your connections to endorse you for a skill that you have added on your profile. One of the most common ways to get endorsed for skills is to endorse the skills of your connections. When you endorse a connection for skill then they are more likely to endorse you back. The other way could be to directly ask them to endorse you.

Recommendations are like an endorsement in a way that they are a validation of your skillset or personality by your peers. But unlike Endorsements, a recommendation could be a description of your skillsets. A Recommendation is more personal than an endorsement since the writer can express themselves in a better way. You can recommend someone and at the same time get recommended by someone.

2. Send Personalized Invites

Sending the “Please add me to your LinkedIn network” is boring, unimaginative and shows a lack of interest. While sending an invite LinkedIn prompts you to add a personal message. Use this to efficiently add a personal note, a meeting or a conference where the two of you might have met. You could also mention a common connection who could have recommended you to connect.

Sending invites to people who may have forgotten you, could be a dead end. Moreover, a person has an option to mark your invite as “ I don’t know this person”. Your profile could be marked restricted by LinkedIn even if 5 people mark your invite as “ I don’t know this person”.

So send invites only to people who might know you or get a common contact for a formal introduction.

3. Regularly Post  On Pulse

Uploading posts on LinkedIn is a good way to keep in contact with current connections and also to find new connections. People have an option to engage with your posts by commenting on them. The comments section is a good place to engage in healthy discussions and receive constructive criticism.

A well written, informative post will be shared by your contacts, thus allowing you an opportunity to make new contacts. Posting regularly will also increase your standing and visibility. Including images in the post will increase the impact of your posts. You could also post videos.

While LinkedIn allows you to post directly on your profile page you can also add a post on Pulse. Pulse is a news and content aggregation site run by LinkedIn. Posting on Pulse will give your profile exposure when the people try to find about the author.

Best days to post on LinkedIn are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The best time to post is just after 9-10 am in the morning and 5-6 in the evening.

4. Create a Showcase Page

If  you are a company that has a LinkedIn profile then you can use Showcase page feature provided by LinkedIn. A showcase page exists as an extension to your company page and can be dedicated to a product or service that your company provides. You can create multiple showcase pages and each page can have its own followers, status updates and functionality.

The pages you create will be visible on the right side of your company page. Remember to keep your company page optimized to increase its discoverability.

5. Engage Your Employees

Engaging your employees on LinkedIn will keep them motivated. Employees will happily share achievements on their own profiles creating a multiplier effect. Engaging employees on LinkedIn will ensure that your company is presented in a positive light online.

A positive outlook towards your company will help you attract better talent, prospects and will lead to overall progress in business operations.

6. Connect With Influencers

On LinkedIn, you do not necessarily have to be a subject matter expert on everything under the sun. To counter this you can connect with Influencers. Influencers are people who are at the top of their game in whatever they do. Bill Gates is an influencer because he has been the CEO of one of the biggest software company called Microsoft.

Actors, Politicians, Scientists, Authors can all be Influencers. Find the Influencer who is most relevant to your industry and connect with them. When you follow influencers you will have access to the latest thoughts and trends in the industry. Any interaction with an influencer will always be beneficial for you.

7. Connect With “People You May Know”

People you may know is a handy tool when it comes to increasing your network. An algorithm will suggest you new connections on the basis of geographical proximity, job roles, current-previous organizations and host of other factors.

Find the people with at least 10 connections, study their profile for shared interests and leverage this information to connect with new people.

Using this tool will also ensure that your account is not reported as spam. When you send a connection request to strangers they might report your profile as spam. If you get marked as spam for 5 times LinkedIn might temporarily disable your profile.

8. Create Groups

LinkedIn allows all its users to create and participate in groups. Dedicate a group to a certain topic or an interest on which you would like to engage people.  Groups have a major advantage that you do not need to add people as connections to participate in discussion s with them.

A group can introduce you to other like-minded individuals who might end up sending you a connection request, thereby increasing your connections.

9. Send Warmer Introduction In Message

One of the biggest mistakes that we do on LinkedIn is to forget the person as soon as they accept the connection request. To build a lasting professional relationship the conversation must begin as soon as the person accepts your connection.

Sending a warm introductory message will only get the conversation flowing in the right direction. Do not forget to include the name of the person in the message. Browse through their profile to find a recent achievement or common interests to ensure that the recipient feels a personalized touch in the message.

10. Post and Share Videos

Videos are the most engaging type of media in our times. A 5-minute video can provide as much information as contained in a small article. People are more likely to click on a video to watch it rather than reading an article. Also, the chances of someone sharing the video will be always higher than somebody sharing an article.

Every time you post a video your connections will get a notification, this makes sure that you always remain fresh n their memory. So use videos to efficiently deliver your point, while increasing your reach due to the multiplier effect.

11. Use Hashtags

Hashtags are not exclusive to Twitter. You could use hashtags on LinkedIn too. While posting any article, video or infographic on LinkedIn you can mark it with relevant hashtags. Hashtags make it easy for the people searching for a particular keyword to find out about your post. Hashtags can be the simplest ways to get discovered on LinkedIn. Once people start discovering your content often, they will be compelled to connect with you.

12. Export Contacts To Have E-mail Database Of Your Connections

You have a great network on LinkedIn but now you want to focus on an overall social media networking strategy. But how do you find your connections on other social platforms such as twitter and facebook or add them to your mailing lists? This could help you find an increased number of connections to add to your leads funnel.

Go to settings and export Contact data as a CSV file. Now you can use this file to find the accounts of your contacts on other platforms.

13. Engage Via News-feed.

Everyone using the platform scrolls through the news feed. LinkedIn allows you to share, like and comment on the activities of your connections. In addition to that, you could also interact with public posts. These activities will increase your visibility on LinkedIn.

Whenever you comment on a public post, practically everyone on LinkedIn can see your comment irrespective of the fact that they are on your connections list or not. This is the kind of Engagement that will multiply your connections by 10x in a very short span of time.
