For a personalized liberal arts education committed to the values of honor, community and respect, the Sewanee University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, is a great choice. The small size of the college encourages involvement among its students. More than 100 student clubs and community groups are available to join, with interests ranging from choir to rugby to recycling to language houses. Given the school’s location, college life is also physical, as students have opportunities for climbing, caving, cycling and hiking. Students also work closely with the community. Whether they’re building houses, tutoring children, feeding the hungry or mentoring youths, students strengthen the local community. Many go on to help the world through international service opportunities, also offered through the school. Academics offered at the school include more than 36 majors, 27 minors and 15 special programs including International and Global Studies, Humanities, Women’s Studies, Political Science and more. The university offers pre-professional programs in medicine, law, nursing and business. Study abroad and internship programs are also available. Admissions require students to submit a Common Application, official high school transcript, personal essay, ACT/SAT scores and two letters of recommendation. The school looks favorably upon students involved in extracurricular or community service activities. Students who file a FAFSA by March 1 will be considered to receive need-based institutional grants and scholarships. Other forms of financial aid include federal grants, loans, work-study programs and work scholarships.
