The University of El Salvador was founded on 16 February 1841. The relevant decree was issued by the Constituent Assembly, which had just been installed. The University of El Salvador was founded on 16 February 1841. The relevant decree was issued by the Constituent Assembly, which had just been installed. It was signed by Juan Jose Guzman, presidential deputy, deputies and secretaries Leocadio Romero and Manuel Barberena. The execution order was signed by Juan Nepomuceno Fernández Lindo y Zelaya, who ruled the country in his capacity as interim head of state, the January 7, 1841 to February 1, 1842. The execution of the decree of foundation was given by the section chief in charge of the Ministry of Foreign and Interior, who ordered his printing, publishing and circulation. The UES began its activities until l843, providing pure, logical, moral, metaphysical and mathematical physics generally. En1880 was subdivided into faculties, some of which later disappeared, while new ones were created. It is the first and largest institution of higher education of the Republic of El Salvador. It is also the only public university in the country. Ciudad Universitaria, its main campus is located in the city of San Salvador; also it has offices in the cities of Santa Ana, San Miguel and San Vicente. It has played a key role in the development of Salvadoran society on the educational, social, economic and political spheres. Some of the main characters in the history of El Salvador have been trained in this university. Currently, in 2014, the World Universities Ranking on the Web ranks the UES as the best university in the Republic of El Salvador, placing the Alma Mater in 3453 position internationally. The World Universities Ranking on the Web is done by the Laboratory Cybermetrics Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) of Spain. UES annually publishes a national call for college admissions in the different media, with the steps specified, the venues, warnings and recommendations of the selection process. Aspiring entrants must submit to the general admission test where core subjects (Mathematics and Algebra, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Language and Literature) are evaluated. In 2013, according to data based on the number of students enrolled in the Alma Mater, 56.267 students were registered.
