Unifei

The Federal University of Itajubá - Unifei, founded on November 23, 1913, under the name of Itajubá Electrotechnical and Mechanical Institute - IEMI, on the personal initiative of lawyer Theodomiro Carneiro Santiago, was the tenth School of Engineering to be established in the country. IEMI excelled in the training of professionals specialized in energy systems, notably in generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. The first class graduated in 1917, the year the Institute was officially recognized by the Federal Government. In 1936, the course was completely reformulated to match that of the Polytechnic School of Rio de Janeiro, and the name of the institute was changed to Itajubá Electrotechnical Institute - IEI. In 1956 the Institute was federalized, but the name of Itajubá-EFEI Federal School of Engineering was only adopted in 1968.
