The first antecedents of the Universidad Austral de Chile originate in 1942, when a group of prominent personalities from Valdivia, led by Dr. Eduardo Morales Miranda, gave life to the so-called Friends of Art Society, an entity that promoted the cultivation, development and dissemination of culture in our city for the construction of a University. This idea was received in the 1950s by the senator from the province of Valdivia, Mr. Carlos Acharán Pérez de Arce, who from the stages of the National Congress, announced the project of the Valdivians and achieved its subsequent consolidation. Another of the original nuclei that advocated the idea of ​​creating a local university campus, the Medical Society of Valdivia, founded on November 17, 1944. Several years passed when the university project remained in a stage of successive proposals and diverse approaches. Finally, on February 16, 1954, the doctor and philanthropist Dr. Eduardo Morales Miranda proclaimed himself as president of the newly established directory of partners of the Universidad Austral de Chile. The financing was achieved thanks to the voluntary contributions of some citizens committed to this cause and of the Valdivian industrialists. Thanks to the help provided by the Valdivian citizen emeritus Inés Bischoff von Stillfried de Haverbeck, her daughter María Inés Haverbeck de Allende and Elena Haverbeck Richter de Skalweit, they made a solemn donation of extensive properties in the Miraflores sector. In this way the University could count on the first buildings in which the subjects of the new careers were taught. The Universidad Austral de Chile was founded through Supreme Decree No. 3,757, of September 7, 1954, in Valdivia, in response to the urgent need to have an institution of higher university education in the south of the country.
