Skagit Valley College on Skagit Island offers a variety of learning options and courses including a unique approach to the two-year degree. Located in Mount Vernon, Washington with campus centers throughout the region, Skagit Valley College offers standard associate’s degrees and certificates in a range of fields. Among them are Nursing, Business, Dental Assisting, Marine Technology, Criminal Justice, various technical fields and the liberal arts and sciences. However, Skagit Valley’s approach is quite different from many schools. At Skagit Valley, students learn through Learning Communities, which are interdisciplinary programs that combine study of several subjects learning communities help students to better understand each subject and make connections between them. Another of Skagit Valley’s innovative approaches is the Learning Into Action course, which allows students to devise their own independent study course with an advisor. Other Skagit Valley offerings include a high school diploma completion program and basic skills courses in ESL and GED. Student life at Skagit Valley encompasses numerous student services such as academic advising, career services, cooperative education, disability support, veteran’s education and a women’s center. Extracurriculars include athletic teams and other activities. Admission requirements to Skagit Valley differ based on the program to which one is applying and one’s educational background. Students taking class for no credit may register without going through the application process. Tuition at Skagit Valley is comparable to that of most other community colleges. Financial aid is also available to those who qualify.
