Shimer College

Shimer College is a private, undergraduate liberal arts college in Chicago, Illinois. As this school shies away from the traditional academic structure, it is the perfect school for inquisitive, individualistic, and creative thinkers. Academics are tailored to fit the schedules of students; with weekday, weekend and online courses, students can attend school when it is convenient for them. Classes are exclusively small seminars in which students discuss original source material rather than read textbooks. Admissions to Shimer are not based on a minimum GPA or test scores, but rather on writing samples and a personal interview with the admissions committee. While scores are not mandatory, students are advised to take the ACT or SAT if applying as an Early Entrant. There is an essay portion of the application which asks that individuals analyze their academic experience while demonstrating their creativity. The essay portion is one of the most influential aspects of the application process. College life at Shimer is unique. Fraternities, sororities and other organizations are forbidden as this school feels that they promote exclusivity. This school holds potluck meals, which are open to all staff and students, where the community can meet. Shimer also throws a bi-annual talent show where students, faculty, and alumni can share their work and talents with each other. Tuition does not vary depending on residency. Tuition assistance is available through payment plans and tuition deferment. Shimer College financial aid is available to those who qualify. Aid is available through institutional scholarships, federal and state grants, private scholarships, and loans. Shimer has a scholarship matching program where they will match up to $2,000 in external scholarships for students who use their awards toward Shimer tuition.
