New College Of Florida

A small college in Sarasota, New College of Florida offers an alternative approach to traditional liberal arts and sciences academics. One example of New College's innovative methods is the narrative evaluation. Instead of grades, students receive written assessments of their performance upon the completion of each course. New College also requires students to complete three Independent Study Projects which could encompass research, internships and other outside projects and activities. About 40 majors, or areas of concentration as they're called at New College, are offered. They include Anthropology, Art History, Marine Biology, Chinese Language and Culture, Medieval Studies, Music and Social Sciences. There are also pre-professional programs in such field areas as Law and Medicine. Another example of New College's alternative approach is its offering of joint or combined degree programs. The creative arts and community service are a large part of New College's student life. There is an annual juried art exhibition, a black box theater and opportunities to volunteer at such places as the Boys and Girls Club of America. Transcripts, recommendation letters and a personal essay are some of the materials required by admissions. Students may also apply for financial aid if they need help with tuition costs.
