Communauté Urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole

The Aix-Marseille Provence metropolis is a first because it is translated by the creation of a totally new territorial entity resulting from the merger of six intercommunalities each existing today with different characteristics. Only the metropolis has a legal personality and as such is the only deliberative assembly. An unprecedented situation that elected officials and administrations of these territories will have to experiment. The other recently created Metropolises are of a different nature. There are 11 currently. The Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis (49 municipalities) created in 2012 The 10 metropolises created in 2015 following the transformation of 6 urban communities and 4 urban communities: Lille Metropolis, Bordeaux Métropole, Toulouse Métropole, Nantes Métropole, Rouen Normandy, Strasbourg EuroMétropole, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, Rennes Métropole and Brest Métropole. All these metropolises were created on the basis of a demographic criterion: the population of their central city exceeded 400 000 inhabitants and thus kept the same territory. The Métropole de Lyon is also a special case because it exercises both the powers devolved to the county councils and those devolved to the metropolises.
