The largest community college in Alabama, Calhoun Community College in Tanner, Alabama, serves residents of Limestone County whether they’re seeking a two-year professional degree or certification, planning to transfer to a four-year school or have yet to earn their GED. Calhoun also provides recreational, social and creative outlets and activities. Students who pursue Calhoun’s two-year degree track may choose majors within some of the following departments: *Allied Health *Business *Technology *Paralegal Studies In addition to these career preparation programs, Calhoun’s academic selections include majors within the Humanities and Social Sciences for those who plan to continue onto a four-year degree. Admission to these programs is open to all students who meet a minimum age requirement and have a high school diploma or GED. However, even those without a diploma may attend Calhoun; its Basic Education and GED-prep courses are designed for these students who, after passing their GED, may then attend one of Calhoun’s two-year programs. Its Workforce Preparation Center is another branch of Calhoun, and trains and certifies businesses and individuals in business, health and technology-related skills and fields. So that students may balance studying with fun, Calhoun also has more than 20 student organizations, which include a broadcasting club, a drama club, a music club and a Native American Student Association. Calhoun also has a student-operated television station. Calhoun’s tuition is substantially reduced for in-state residents. Students may also get scholarships, loans and veteran’s benefits. Students are encouraged to fill out a FAFSA after applying for admission. All entering students must also take an entrance exam.
