One of the higher ranking historically black colleges (HBCU), Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina is a place where African-American students can find camaraderie and success. A relatively small and cohesive school, Benedict College houses most of its students on campus. Students at Benedict may choose from more than 25 majors, which offer degrees in business, the humanities, education and the sciences, among others. Most impressive among these is the degree program in Physics, which has been ranked highly among African American colleges. That is not the only area in which Benedict gets a high ranking: for three years, the Benedict College Debate Team won 1st place at conferences of African American colleges. Benedict College’s student services also provide every type of support to insure student success. Whether a student needs a note-taker, peer tutoring or is interested in an internship or vocational rehabilitation, student services offers it. Financial aid is another way in which Benedict College supports student success, enabling those with limited finances to attend by supplying grants, scholarships, loans and work-study plans to those who qualify.
