Advertising Standards Authority – ASA is the U.K.’s independent regulator of advertising across all media. It applies the Advertising Codes, which are written by the Committees of Advertising Practice. Advertising Standards Authority – ASA is the jury that decides whether advertisements have broken the Advertising Codes. It acts on complaints and proactively checking the media to take action against misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements. In 1961, the Council of the Advertising Association decided to establish a self-regulatory system for non-broadcast advertising, and as a result, the first edition of the CAP code was published. Advertising Standards Authority – ASA held its inaugural meeting in 1962. In 1975, The ASA launched its first advertising campaign to inform the public, industry, and government of its existence and to invite them to refer specific complaints. In 1991, it co-founded the European Advertising Standards Alliance with 11 other countries and by 2013, Advertising Standards Authority – ASA took on responsibility for regulating Online Behavioral Advertising.
