As Newisys came ever closer to being purchased every manager brought out their personal 'career calculator' to try and make a best-guess decision on what they should do. Several of my professional contacts made the decision to check out what Lifesize Communications was all about - this was about 7 years ago. The person put in charge of development brought me in to help save them time on some JIRA system's configuration work, and that's how it began. It's was a much less complicated company then and when I was able to get away with only working 60hr across my other two clients I'd have a few hours to work on LS Initiates. Some of these included:JIRA/Salesforce intetgrattionIntegrating JIRA w/ Oracle to facilitate financial approvals w/o additional Oracle modules or reentering informationRefactoring what has become the distribution vector for software updates to Lifesize products from a single file script to a database driven skinned and themed customer support website with integrations into JIRA and OracleAs Lifesize grew so did their VCS - and when the network delay for India to pull software for local buiids was introducing product release delays they had me setup and test replicating SVN repositories to India. By the time I was able to pull out of that project, having provided documentation and internal support staff mentoring sufficient to replace my involvement the SVN was being replicated across 6 sites globally. There were other big projects but that's all I'm thinking of now. In addition to those more Business Systems centric activities I was the single point for support for their JIRA and Confluence software.

Was engaged by Smiley Media to migrate their Issue Tracking to Atlassian JIRA including all of their existing issues in an older version of Mantis. Not, IMSHO, a newer version of Mantis would have provided any less of a reason to run away.This was one of the best of my company's 'Starter Projects' - that is projects we were awarded after I finally became comfortable with the idea of having employees. The core team was identified (by interest, skill and conversation) and we were able to bring the client to JIRA w/o wasting money on unnessary tasks (i.e. 100% data migration goals)

Principal go-to for the effort to convert PayPal from ClearQuest to JIRA. Wrote 98% of the code used during the conversion and 80% of the custom packages used in the JIRA instance today. Managed to turn a total failure into a astonishing success with 4 hours and the assistance of a great idea (can we do this at the same time?) and a competent Oracle DBA. Can now provide any company with the ability to convert from ClearQuest to Atlassian's JIRA with a minimum downtime of 360 minutes (provided certain requirement are met of course).While at PayPal I worked with several different internal teams to implement gathered requirements and further define/implement existing requirements for converting PayPal Engineering from ClearQuest to JIRA. Extensive work performed migrating their existing data to JIRA to preserve Business Continuity. Currently providing Atlassian support to multiple departments within the organization

Designed, Implemented and Supported Enterprise Scale Invoicing solution using Java, JSP, JAVA EE and Oracle. This was my company's first contract and provided me with my career's best lifetime for a piece of software - which was from Jan 2004 through Jan 2012. Which, while less than the length of time every 9 year old has wondered if it was really such a good idea to leave their first home, did far eclipse every single piece of software I'd written as a educated professional.Interersting trivia from this engagement:1. I obtained this contract after making my first phone call to an ex-colleague and writting the first career defining emails after starting my own company1. I'd never written an enterprise scale program in JAVA, let alone J2EE - a point which was pointed out quite plainely by their CTO Billy Taylor during my 'pitch meeting' where they said 'this PHP/Oracle/Excel solution you're recommending sounds like a children's toy. We'd like it written using J2EE and other advanced (for the time) technologies." - I was sitting there doing the consultants BS talk about how some more discovery was warranted prior to making that decision when Billy interrupted me and said 'well - it doesn't sound like you're all that familiar with the technologies we would like this project executed with..." - to which I gave some of the (now painful to hear) sentences containing words like 'fast learner', 'dedicated', 'driven to success'. I left that meeting disheartened and feeling beaten down but went home and componsed a much stronger message to Billy regarding my ability to deliver an excellent solution for any problem which NewsStand had or would encounter related to the financial invoice generation for their vendors. And then I pushed send, went to bed with thought that nobody likes a smart-ass. They called me back in 3 weeks later and gave me a place to sit, where it began.Later implemented the entire JIRA product suite and migrated issues from Bugzilla and Rally.

Worked with a very large company implementing JIRA to some very exacting, customized standards which later proved so difficult to upgrade as the 8 month contract negotiation converted my fixed-bid proposal into a Time & Materials engagement which never included time for us to write up any documentation describing the customizations we made for them.

What did you do as Business Analyst at Newisys? Well, most anything they asked me to do that I didn't think was stupid or didn't advance what I believed to be the 'best approach'.The sad thing about being smarter than most everyone around you is that you aren't, and you forget that fact all too easily. Plus, there's the whole thing about when you're better than everyone else people tend to assume you're pretentious. Other than that though, it was a great job and helped connect me to people I've had the privilege of calling my friends since that time.Plus I ran into the totally awesome dude who fixed up my factory second Sunburst Les Paul FOR FREE because he didn't like to hear about guitars with problems...I (sadly) have misplaced his name but he's pretty much the coolest frood I'd the pleasure of knowing during my Newisys Tenure

Responsibilities of a personal nature

Typical startup waterfall "build it fast, they're coming" type project where I took work done by another contractor and rewrote it to scale oracle Applications Order Management to handle subscription based orders. It was a lot of fun, and I got to learn about the early riots in Paris when they implemented the leap year initially and it cost normal paris workers 13 (or so) days of wages. Crazy stuff...lots of date math, lots of fun with Oracle PL/SQL. Glad that's behind me now.

Managed a team of 5 contract Oracle Applications programmers while working with the Living.com order management and warehouse teams. Acted as team lead for the contract programmers and directed there efforts to assist me in providing Oracle Reports and Forms as well as back end design and coding of extensions to Order Management allowing multiple forms of currency to be accepted as payment for items in the customers shopping cart during electronic checkout.

Managed a diverse team of consultants (employees of BPA Systems) engaged in multiple high profile geographically dispersed client engagements during which we would implement the core BPA Systems software modules responsible for interfacing bar coding equipment and labels with Oracle Applications.

Worked in a small team on a project for the City of Austin

Keeping tabs on a group of 5 consultants who all worked on different projects run by different project managers while I ran my own projects utilizing a completely different set of contractors, some of which were employees and others that were contract developers from India. All in all it was a hopelessly disorganized management mess where nobody had authority over what anyone else was working on and the entire concept of TEAM was lost like tears in rain.All that said, I did enjoy a few of the projects that I worked on and gathered a few LCE's (life changing events, or Life Changing Emails), for my troubles there. I still enjoy the few connections from that time that I have.

For Projectivity I provided two main services - Lawson Financial Software Systems Consulting and lead developer on a Y2K solution. The Lawson work took me up and down the East Coast of the United States, typically on weekends, where I would be responsible for upgrading mission critical financial software for very large and secure companies. During the week I would wear my developer hat and work with a team banging out the design of a Y2K Financial system using the typical waterfall methodology in widespread use at the time.

I transitioned across several different jobs during my tenure at Pharmaco - primarily I was the lead UNIX (HPUX) Administrator and senior Lotus Notes Administrator and Developer. Later I became involved with Oracle Administration and Lawson Financials system management.
