During my career, I have provided legal advice and representation to a large number of companies, both big and small, on intellectual property matters with a focus on complex, high-stakes patent litigation. I have demonstrated the ability to effectively navigate complicated legal and factual issues with a pragmatic approach. While the devil is certainly in the details, I believe that an effective attorney is one who can simplify the issues for his audience. I have accomplished this throughout my career by not only having a strong and broad legal background, but also by being able to identify the key issues and by being an effective communicator – a good writer and oral advocate. Having worked on literally hundreds of IP cases, I have also established extensive and meaningful contacts that I continue to leverage on a daily basis. I am currently responsible for the US litigation docket for HTC – one of the busiest in the country. HTC has had over 300 patent cases in the US over the past dozen years in district courts and in the International Trade Commission, including the smartphone wars and numerous NPE cases. I manage our in-house team of IP litigators in San Diego, interface with our legal team in Taiwan and Europe and coordinate with our outside counsel. Since I joined HTC, we have amassed an unparalleled number of victories (65 and counting!) in our IP litigation matters, including trial wins, summary judgment, invalidation of patents in reexamination proceedings in the USPTO and inter partes reviews before the PTAB, and many times simply convincing the other side to drop their case and walk away. In recent years, I have a renewed focus on SEP licensing and FRAND issues as the 4G and 5G landscape evolves. I also advise our management on our prosecution and acquisition opportunities. As HTC moves into new device categories (VR and connected devices), I will continue to provide advice into its IP strategy in my leadership role.I am also the head of US corporate legal for HTC. In this role, I support our leadership team not only in North America, but also around the world given our global footprint. I manage all of our corporate counsel in Seattle and Berkeley.
