About Tina Homayouni
I used to want to study medicine. I fell in love with science at a young age and became captivated by how the body works, and what happens when dysfunction occurs. This interest in science led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science at Western University.I volunteered extensively throughout my undergrad, striving to not only be a leader, but to create real impact in my communities. I was a United Way campaign leader, while being a non-voting board member of a non-profit organization, Childreach. I love helping people. I also started going after research positions as I wanted to be a part of a collaborative team learning together why disease occurs. The thought of making change in academia excited me. I did an optional science internship program where I worked as a research assistant in a field that was completely out of my knowledge-base: biology. I also worked at the Hospital of Sick Children as a research volunteer, where I worked on multiple projects around cancer, and ended up publishing three times. Yet, I still wasn’t satisfied. My last year of University led me to my dream career. I suffered an injury through Olympic Weightlifting and was recommended to visit a physiotherapist. Immediately I knew this was the path for me. Using evidence-based practice to treat dysfunction, and help others long term on a personal level to achieve their goals is exactly what I wanted to do.So, I’m fusing my passion for exercise and science through physiotherapy. I love connecting with people. I’m committed to life-long learning. I’m curious, passionate, and my mission is to improve quality of life and eliminate pain by leveraging my knowledge in a systematic way.Other interests- Olympic weightlifting, soccer, piano, reading, and finding new & interesting places to eat in DT Toronto

Registered Physiotherapist
Student Placement- Lifemark Markham
I worked in the WSIB specialty clinic with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to client care. I directly worked with kinesiologists, occupational therapists, and surgeons to deliver quality client care. I treated using the biopsychosocial model with every client, understanding the range of factors that can contribute to injury and prognosis in order to deliver optimal recovery.
Student Placement- Cancer Rehabilitation And Survivorship Center
During this 5-week split placement with Toronto Rehab, I've conducted comprehensive holistic assessments and provided physiotherapy management for patients diagnosed with cancer. The primary conditions I assessed and managed were lymphedema, cording, general deconditioning, and general MSK conditions associated with cancer (ex. myofascial tightness, frozen shoulder). I have gained significant experience with motivational interviewing as this skill is valuable and important when providing consultation and conducting comprehensive assessments. I have also supervised CaRE-AC @ ELLISCR, which is a group-based exercise and education program for individuals diagnosed with advanced cancer. Important outcome measures I have utilized and become familiar with are the DART (ESAS-r), GODIN, and WHODAS.As this placement was split with Toronto Rehab, my roles between the two areas of practice differed considerably and I was also using two completely different charting systems. Skills developed through this process were adapting quickly to different environments and learning in a fast-paced environment.
Student Placement- Outpatient Msk Rehab
During this 5-week split placement with Princess Margaret, I have provided outpatient rehabilitation for a variety of MSK conditions such as knee fractures, total knee arthroplasty, total hip arthroplasty, POEMS, frozen shoulder, general deconditioning, and myofascial tightness (associated with cancer treatment). I have performed initials, progress, and discharge assessments and have gained significant experience with exercise prescription and treatment progression. Additionally, I've become experienced with several types of PT treatment strategies such as myofascial stretching, PNF, and manual therapy (mobilization).
Student Placement- Inpatient Neuro Rehab At St. John'S Hospital
During this 5-week placement, I provided inpatient rehabilitation primarily for the stroke population, but also for patients with other neurological conditions (i.e. acquired brain injuries). The primary technique I utilized was the NDT approach. Throughout this placement, I conducted a large number of initial, progress, and discharge assessments. I have gained significant experience in exercise prescription and exercise progression. I have also become proficient with the use of certain outcome measures, such as the BERG and CMSA.
Student Placement- Acute Inpatient Ward/Icu
In this 5-week placement as part of my Master's degree, I worked in acute inpatient, providing cardiorespiratory physiotherapy for patients in the post-cardiovascular surgery unit. I primarily worked in the cardiovascular ward, but have some experience in cardiac ICU. I've developed significant experience with transfers, auscultation, oxygen titration, and manual breathing techniques (i.e. percussions, vibrations, rib springs). Importantly, I've gained significant experience with discharge planning, working under pressure, and online charting.
Genomics And Bioinformatics Research Assistant- London Research And Development Center
During this 1-year undergraduate science internship that was done between my 3rd and 4th year, I conducted research looking at the effects of cold stress on genetically modified soybeans and arabidopsis. In this internship, I worked well under minimal supervision but also collaborated with multiple research scientists and graduate students. I have conducted multiple experiments, including but not limited to DNAseq, qPCR, RT-PCR, RNA extractions, DNA extractions, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning and transformation experiments. Moreover, I performed Next-Generation sequencing on DNA libraries using the Illumina MiSeq Sequencer. The transferable skills I have gained in this internship are learning in a fast-paced environment and time management.
