DPhil Student in the Department of Particle Physics working on the Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Thesis: "Measurement of kaon and pion contributions to the T2K neutrino beam." I considered the sources of background to the electron neutrino appearance measurement, and evaluated the use of far detector (Super-K) measurements of high-energy neutrinos to directly measure the contamination of the muon neutrino beam. The two main backgrounds to the electron neutrino appearance measurement are dependent on the production of the different neutrino parents at the T2K target. A method of measuring the contributions to the T2K muon neutrino beam from different hadrons is developed using near detector (ND280) data and Monte Carlo. Features of the decay kinematics of pions and kaons are used and a 17 parameter maximum-likelihood fit is applied, with the neutrino interaction cross-section uncertainties incorporated. Statistical and systematic errors are also evaluated.

Supervising 3rd year Physics undergraduate students during their 2-day Nuclear and Particle practical assessments. Involves assisting with the apparatus, supervising use of radioactive sources, teaching any necessary background theory and marking work at the end of the 2 days. Also assisted with the marking of the end-of-year practical assessments.

This involved: * creating a bespoke data dictionary with a structure and set of rules that made all terms easy to interpret, searchable, and as broad or precise as required. * deciphering and cataloguing all data ingested from varied bank systems for use in financial crime analyses.
