I'm a biologist looking at the genetic basis of human cardiovascular physiology. I use fruit fly genetics to identify pathways controlling heart function and the development of specialised kidney cells called podocytes.

    The British Heart Foundation fund this work, which aims to identify pathways regulating a gene involved in cardiac and renal physiology. I'm using a novel approach which involves fruit flies to provide insights into the human gene, a transcription factor that regulates scarring, metabolism and heart function in mammalian models. The first part of the project was conducted at the Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute in sunny San Diego, whereas the remainder of the work, will be conducted at the, albeit less sunny, Centre For Cardiovascular Science in the University of Edinburgh.

    I began a small group which uses fruit fly to model cardiovascular biology. The fly provides many advantages over the mammalian systems, most notably its genetic tractability. We've made important observations regarding the dietary control of diurnal behaviour patterns and how the Fermitin family of cell adhesion proteins affects cardiac development. The model is also a great training ground for students looking for novel and very powerful ways to study cardiovascular genetics and physiology.
