Run Free Texas is a nonprofit organization that offers a running/walking program to adolescents. It is focused on at-risk youth who are faced with deteriorating family structure, gang activity, criminal activity, violence in schools, peer pressure, bullying, substance abuse issues and other social challenges. In 2010, the recidivism rate across the State of Texas was at 52% underlining the fact that current programs are not working for the population. The mission of Run Free Texas is to utilize physical activity as a catalyst to encourage, restore, and unify the participating youth in a supportive yet challenging physical environment. Cognitive principles that teach life skills, healthy behavior and help participants recognize their potential are being utilized.

My initial position at Williamson County was a Supervision Officer. I managed a caseload of up to 35 youth that were placed on formal probation or on a deferred prosecution. As their probation officer, I made sure they complied with the conditions ordered by the Judge as well as maintained appropriate conduct in their home as well as in school. If the youth failed to comply, I would take the necessary action to hold them accountable.My second position was that of Court Officer. I supervised youth with new offenses through the court process. As their Court Officer I had the responsibility to gather as much information on the youth, his/her family, and the offense to make the best recommendation to the court in regards to what actions should be taken, if any, against the youth.

In Brazoria County, I began my career as a Juvenile Detention Officer where I supervised youth while they were detained in a juvenile detention center. I maintained safety and securtity of the youth during this time.I then transferred to a Juvenile Probation Officer position where I supervised up to 55 youth who were placed on formal probation.I ended with the position of Residential Officer where I supervised youth that were on formal probation, failed, and were removed from their home and ordered to reside at the Brazoria County Juvenile Justice Residential facility. I provided groups for the youth discussing daily life, conflicts within the group, discipline and praise. I also worked closely with the counselors we contracted with to ensure the youth were getting the best possible services. In addition, those youth that violated rules I would handle their detention hearings and all of their court documents. If they failed the program, I would handle the paperwork to commit them to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
