About Matthew Klingle
I'm associate professor of history and environmental studies at Bowdoin College, where I've taught since 2001. My research and teaching focuses environmental and urban history, history of science and medicine, and the history of the North American West. I have received fellowships and honors for my work from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, National Endowment for the Humanities, American Society for Environmental History, and the Organization of American Historians. In 2006, I received the Sydney B. Karofsky Prize for Junior Faculty, the only college-wide award for teaching at Bowdoin. I have also worked as a public historian, taught high school, and volunteered for environmental and political organizations in Seattle and Maine's mid-coast region. I've published academic articles in History and Theory, Journal of Urban History, and Journal of the West, essays for several anthologies, plus general interest articles for Grist Magazine and High Country News. My first book, Emerald City: An Environmental History of Seattle (Yale University Press, 2007; paper, 2008), won the 2009 Ray Allen Billington Prize (biennial) from the Organization of American Historians. I'm currently in the early stages of my second book-length project, tentatively titled "Sweet Blood: History and the Nature of Diabetes and Chronic Disease in America," an environmental and social history that explores the origins and consequences of diabetes from the mid-19th century to the present day. Thanks to a New Directions Fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, I'll be on leave for the next two academic years (2011-13) to receive training in public health and biomedicine, plus conduct research at archives and libraries around the United States and Canada.Specialties: American history, environmental history, Western U.S. history, urban history, history of science and medicine, environmental studies
