Research Assistant Professor And Founder, Neuromorphics LabBoston University Nov 2011 - Aug 2017Boston, Ma, Us• Research: founded and led the Boston University Neuromorphics Lab, securing multimillion-dollar funding from DARPA, NASA, NSF, ONR, AFRL, and corporate sponsors. Directed and managed advanced AI projects, such as the DARPA SyNAPSE initiative, which focused on developing low-power, brain-inspired neural systems. Worked with NASA’s Langley Research Center leading the development of unsupervised neuromorphic computing systems for autonomous Mars rovers. These projects laid the foundation for commercial advancements in robotics and consumer technology, driving innovation in visual processing for unmanned systems.• Interdisciplinary: built from the ground up and mentored a diverse research team, publishing dozens of high-impact papers and early patents that contributed significantly to the field of AI, neuromorphic technology, and robotics.• Academic: taught advanced AI courses and mentored Ph.D. candidates, helping to shape the next generation of AI academic and industry leaders. Delivered lectures at prestigious forums, including two TEDx, NASDAQ, Bloomberg, MIT, keynote at Mobile World Congress Drone Summit, NASA, the Pentagon, GTC, InterDrone, Los Alamo National Lab, GE, Air Force Research Labs, HP, iRobot, Samsung, LG, Qualcomm, Huawei, Ericsson, BAE Systems, AI World, Mitsubishi, ABB and Accenture, among many others.

Principle Investigator, Darpa Synapse ProjectBoston University Dec 2009 - Mar 2011Boston, Ma, UsProject Coordinator and Senior Investigator within the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics (SyNAPSE) Project at the Department of Cognitive and Neural Systems and CELEST, BOSTON UNIVERSITY, Boston, MA. SyNAPSE goal was to implement Deep Networks and Neural Networks in hardware. The Department of Cognitive and Neural Systems is the leading institution in the NSF sponsored CELEST (Center for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology). The focus of CELEST is the study of real-time autonomous learning systems through the integration of experimental and computational brain science and biologically inspired technology with the ultimate goal of modeling how the brain learns. A key goal of this research is to understand how brain mechanisms give rise to behavioral functions. CELEST plays a unique role in developing advanced models that explain these principles and in applying these breakthrough models to solve otherwise intractable problems in technology. My main responsibilities within the SyNAPSE project are coordinating research activities of all BU personnel to ensure timely execution of deliverable milestones, and maintain clear lines of communication between BU and our SyNAPSE industrial partner Hewlett-Packard (HP). Another major responsibility is to lead research teams for key projects in two areas: (1) consulting about the mathematical equations that can realize desired functional competences and be embodied in neural hardware; and (2) basic research to discover and develop biological neural networks that can achieve self-stabilizing adaptive intelligent behaviors in real-world environments.
