Vice PresidentPandora Digital Media Systems Aug 2002 - Dec 2003Not related to Pandora music (although we sold them the domain)This was the stealth name we used for a think tank funded by Kevin Fong at Mayfield to explore the future of the Enterprise Datacenter. We interviewed a bunch of company CIOs and CTOs and developed theories we presented to Mayfield about the space. We then developed a BizPlan which centered around smoothing out the utilization curve on servers by using virtual machines and being able to dynamically move them from one physical machine to another. In other words, what is now basically known as "cloud". We had a working prototype using VMWare servers but the tech bubble had just burst and funding was challenging so we tabled the idea and returned the remaining funds to Mayfield.

We defined and integrated the technologies which turned the browser from a one way consumer of information into a true platform. Including: Java, JavaScript and Plugins* Worked with 3rd party companies to get them to create the first browser plugins (Adobe, Macromedia, etc)Was the "voice" of the client for the company. Communicated with press, analysts and customers on what the vision of the company was and what they could do with a Web browser (it was new!).Became "Head of SWAT team" at Netscape which basically meant that I was a free agent who was thrown at wherever there was fire and I was needed. Various tasks included:- Flying around with key sales team and being the tech guy who met with CxOs-Company representative to press and analysts- Working with key customers on defining their platform and browser needs and being the bridge to engineering to communicate and prioritize these- Working with engineering on forward looking projects (e.g. I led an unreleased effort at "location independence" where we stored your browser and other files on remote servers - e.g Dropbox long before Dropbox)
