Educational Haptic Touchscreens: In this work, I have developed custom and commercial touchscreen platforms to teach graphical mathematics concepts to visually impaired students. I developed several educational modules on commercial haptic touchscreens to provide both tactile and aural feedback to users, and I assessed the functionality of them through user studies with both sighted and blind users. I have also devised and experimentally validated thin plate and piezoelectric models for developing variable friction haptic surfaces. Media Coverage: The above work has appeared in several media outlets including: BBC Radio, CNET, NSF Science 360, The Atlantic, Engadget, as well as several others. The complete story and video are posted here:http://news.vanderbilt.edu/2012/03/haptic-tablet/Haptic Robots for Engineering Education: In this work, I redesigned the undergraduate System Dynamics laboratory by implementing a one degree of freedom robotic haptic device, the haptic paddle, to enhance students intuitive understanding of the core concepts of dynamic systems. I designed conceptual quiz questions, administered the lab, and assessedstudent learning in the new lab curriculum. I also developed high school level modules in collaboration with three local high school teachers. Mobile Medical Robots: In this work, I designed a wireless insufflation capsule to enhance diagnostic capabilities of current wireless capsule endoscopes in the GI Tract, and conducted several ex-vivo experimental studies. Medical Robots for Cochlear Implant Surgery: In this work, I implemented and assessed different software filters for suppressing tool tip oscillations of an industrial robot for use in cochlear implant surgery, mastoidectomy, and other skull-based surgeries. I conducted accuracy experiments of robotic drilling and milling in both phantom models and cadaver bone, and performed drift experiments of the optical tracker to assess temperature effects of camera readings.
  • Ph.D. Candidate - Teaching Experience
    Vanderbilt University Aug 2008 - May 2013
I have a passion for teaching. The following are brief descriptions of my experiences in teaching and in bettering myself as a teacher. How to Engineer Engineering Education Workshop, 2012: I participated in this annual workshop which offers engineering and science faculty and graduate students a hands-on experience to enhance their teaching by writing clear instructional objectives, using active, cooperative, and problem-based learning, teaching teamwork and problem solving skills, and assessing learning outcomes.Vanderbilt Teaching Certificate Program, 2010-2012: I completed the teaching certificate program, which includes three cycles of inquiry, experimentation, and reflection. In this program, I was observed and received feedback on my teaching from center for teaching personnel, participated in several workshops and small group discussions, and attended GradSTEP, a day-long professional development event for future faculty members. I was also selected to be a panel member for a Scholarship on Teaching and Learning workshop session.Vanderbilt Teaching as Research Fellow, 2008-2009: I redesigned laboratory modules for the undergraduate System Dynamics lab curriculum to includea haptic device, called the haptic paddle. I assessed student learning during the lab by developing a concept inventory covering the core concepts of the course. Further, I investigated not only if students were learning the material, but also when they were learning it, by administering the quiz at multiple time points through the lab session and the semester.COURSES ASSISTED IN TEACHING:System Dynamics, 2008-Present, Vanderbilt University.Taught Laboratory (2008). Designed and assessed curriculum associated with laboratory (2008-Present).Introduction to Engineering, 2008, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.Lecturer. Also responsible for developing and grading assignments, projects, and quizzes.
