I work as a researcher on food packaging, specifically on edible films and coatings and biodegradable packaging. Our team has been working on development of nanocomposite packaging films (reinforced mostly with cellulose nanocrystals), in order to improve mechanical/barrier properties of biopolymers. Some crosslinked films have been developed as well, using non-toxic crosslinking agents such as polycarboxylix acids and phenolic acids, in order to improve water resistance of polysaccharide and protein films.

I'm a Brazilian visiting scientist from Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) working in the UK as part of the Embrapa Labex programme. I'll develop a research project in partnership with IFR (Dr. Keith Waldron) and look for research partnership opportunities involving Embrapa and institutions in UK/Europe focused on agri-food technologies. Our "project of common interest" between Embrapa and the IFR involves the development and characterization of packaging films from polysaccharides extracted from banana skin, pomegranate skin, and wheat straw.
