Teaching practical and theoretical chemistry to undergraduate chemistry students. Pedagogical research and developing links with local schools to develop resources for teachers and expand the chemistry outreach program at King's College. I am one of the chemistry representatives on the Natural and Mathematical Sciences Equality and Diversity committee. I have been Outreach coordinator for the chemistry department since November 2015 and am now co-charing our Athena Swan committee.

Prepare experiements for bioscience and chemistry undergraduates. Maintain analytical equipment (GCMS, LCMS, HPLC, rtPCR etc), promote women in science and encourage widening participation. This includes supervising local school children in short-term work experience to encourage them to pursue careers in science.

Research, design and implement novel chemical reactions. Extract, purify, and fully characterise products. Analyse the reaction and draw meaningful conclusions from the results. During my 4 year PhD, I gave weekly updates to my research groups as well as talks to several hundred chemists within my department as well as internationally at conferences. I am comfortable in a leadership role and have successfully trained hundreds of third year undergraduates at the University of Bristol to use a wide variety of laboratory equipment and apply their theoretical knowledge to their chosen experiments. I supervised several fourth year undergraduate students from the University of Bristol as well as summer students from America. This entailed designing a project, giving them weekly and long term goals. I taught them how to use relevant equipment, analyse their data and become independent researchers. I helped them to write and practice presentations and proof read their final year thesis.

My role included, ensuring University of Bristol students had a good understanding of the chemistry fundamentals the experiment is based on and can safely set up the equipment, monitor and analyse the products generated throughout the experiment. I am comfortable in a leadership role and have successfully trained hundreds of third year undergraduates at the University of Bristol to use a wide variety of laboratory equipment and apply their theoretical knowledge to their chosen experiments. I was also recruited to teach and demonstrate at summer schools for the Open University and GSK year in industry students. These are weeklong programs, the former involves teaching students with a wide variety of experience how to undertake and complete 5 experiments and understand the theory behind it. The latter is third and fourth year undergraduates from universities across the UK and Europe ensuring they have key laboratory and analytical knowledge before starting their placement in Stevenage.

I have spent much of my time outside my own research undertaking Outreach at the University of Bristol, which I found both enjoyable and rewarding. I was predominantly working with children between 14-18 years old teaching them how to behave safely in a research lab environment whilst performing one of two experiments: caffeine extraction or synthesis of benzocaine. These outreach sessions were attended by children across the UK and Ireland giving them a snapshot of what life is like as an undergraduate scientist. The sessions themselves teach pupils time management and prioritisation of activities whilst being exposed to novel laboratory equipment and analytical techniques they will have studied as part of their curriculum.

Teaching undergraduate chemists of various ages and bacgrounds fundamental chemistry lab based techniques (e.g. separation via extraction, recrystallisation), analytical tecniques (IR, TLC) and ensured they all had a good theoretical understanding of what they were doing and why each part of their lab protocol ensured that the desired outcome was possible.

My masters degree was in Pharmaceutical chemistry. I wrote a paper on Development of Ruthenium as an anti-cancer agent with Dr Bernadette Parkin. I did a GSK-EPSRC 10 week summer placement working on molecularly imprined polymers with Dr Marina Resmini and was subsequently invited to a Marie Curie Physical chemistry conference in Warsaw. My final project was on the selective isomerisation of cholecaliferol (Vitamin D), with the aim of working towards a blood test for cancer detection, with Dr Adrian Dobbs.

I sat in on Plastic Surgery Clinics and assisted in theaters to include Craniofacial, Cleft Palate, Burns, Laser, congenital hand disorders, teaching and ENT. I attended daily ward rounds and teaching sessions on tissue viability and wound care.

I took blood, labeled tubes and sent them of to the laboratory, took blood pressure, performed Electrocardiograms, urine analysis and assisted with minor surgery.
