Ips Co-Founder Along With Randy Rarick
    International Professional Surfing Jan 76 - Feb 83 · 7 yrs 1 mo
International Professional Surfing, IPS became the first world pro surfing circuit . The early years required innovation and diplomacy with surfers and event producers around the world. It was my desire for IPS to be cooperative marketing and management organization for the fledgling world pro surfing movement. Randy Rarick devised a fair point system that rated the surfers based on results of the sanctioned events. Patti Paniccia was commissioned to manage the woman's circuit. The tour is now managed by the association of Pro Surfers, ASP and is a huge multiple million dollar industry. Randy, Patti and I are quite proud. The dream of making Pro surfing a respected world wide sport is now a reality.

    Senator State Of Hawaii

Interesting ten years. Due to Hawaii partisan politics I learned to become very creative in getting things done. My proudest achievement was working with Governor Lingle , President Bush and the White House Council on the Enviromental Jim Connaughton creating Papahanaumokuakea the N. W. Hawaiian Archipelago National Marine reserve. As fate would have it my 25th Senatorial district included all the islands and atolls from Nihoa rock north of Kauai to Kure atoll where Hawaiian chain of Islands sink back into Pacific ocean. This became one of the largest commitments to conservation in the world, credit goes to Governor Lingle who took the idea to the White House and to President Bush and Jim Connaughton who made it happen. Papahanaumokuakea will endure beyond our years.

'Triple Crown Of Surfing' Created, Owned And Produced
    Sports Enterprises Dec 71 - Sep 88 · 16 yrs 9 mos
Pro Surfing Created, owned and/or produced the first major pro surfing events in the world, starting with the Pipeline Masters 1971, followed by World Cup for Men and Women, Hawaiian Pro, and the International Tandem Surfing Championships. The Pipeline Masters in the longest standing pro event approaching 45 years . All the events in the early years were covered by network television . This was before cable TV, coverage included ABC Wide World of Sports, CBS Sports Spectacular and NBC Sports World. The Triple Crown is the backbone of the world pro surfing circuit and the related industries. I sold my proprietor interests in the events in 1988. I was quite proud the events helped generate the world wide Pro surfing movement and garnered a tremendous amount of "real deal" publicity that complemented Hawaii tourist industry. Proud to also say my enterprise never did receive a government subsidy.

    Sports Marketing
    Sports Marketing Consultant Aug 88 - Aug 14 · 26 yrs
I have been involved with many aspects of sports event production in Hawaii. This includes being the founder, owner and producer of the Triple Crown of Surfing to Executive Director of the Molokai to Oahu canoe race and other international events. Most of the events were featured on network television around the world. One unique event that was a wonder it even happened was a skydiving championship. We received a permit to have skydivers drop on to a " target" in Kapiolani park. It was quite something. The skydiving athletes were incredible. All landed in the park near the target. I feared I would have to fish some out of the ocean. The triple crown of surfing including the world's most enduring professional surfing competition the Pipeline Masters garnered extensive worldwide publicity for Hawaii. Sports are a major industry in Hawaii.

Studying and reading Hawaiian History has been a life long vigorous pursuit . I have also experienced Hawaii. "The snow goddess Poliahu has chilled my soul while standing on the lofty crest of Maunakea. My heart beat like a chanting drum while running on the King's trail across the blistering lava fields of Kona. High on the summit of Haleakala I have felt the warm rays of dawns early light caress these enchanted islands. Spending a lonely night in a cave in Papalaua valley on the desolate north coast of Molokai I have heard the wind whisper of old Hawaii. My back has ached paddling countless strokes in a Koa canoe across the treacherous Kaiwi channel between Molokai and Oahu. At the foot of the Pali cliff on Oahu I have felt the spirits of the vanquished warriors. Their moans are haunting. I have catapulted across the face of a azure wall of water while surfing the waves of Hanalei on Kauai. These are just some of the blessings of my journey through life in Hawaii, I know her well. My family and friends are my greatest joy.
