    Dr. Qin has co-authored 80 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, with an h-index of 40. Among them, she is the corresponding author of 33 papers (16 since tenure) from GT. Dr. Qin has proven herself an exemplary educator, with an average CIOS teaching effectiveness score of 4.7 out of 5.0 for both graduate and undergraduate courses. Dr. Qin is a recipient of the GT-Class of 1940 W. Roane Beard Outstanding Teacher Award (2020), GT-Provost Teaching and Learning Fellow Award (2018), and GT-Geoffrey G. Eichholz Faculty Teaching Award (2018).Dr. Qin has pioneered a set of in situ techniques for the characterization of atomic/molecular events on the surface of noble-metal nanocrystals in a liquid phase and under operando conditions. In one example, she established the use of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in probing the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of colloidal nanocrystals, as well as catalytic reactions on the surface of designer nanocrystals. Dr. Qin is also widely recognized for her many original contributions to the rational synthesis of metal nanocrystals with novel properties. Dr. Qin is an Associate Editor of Nanoscale (with an impact factor of 8.3), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and also serves on the advisory boards of Journal of Materials Chemistry C and Nanoscale Horizon, RSC. In 2021, Dr. Qin was elected a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Founded in 1841, RSC is the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. The designation of FRSC recognizes Dr. Qin’s outstanding contributions to research, education, and community service.

    As a faculty member in the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT), Dr. Dong Qin has established a visible and vibrant research and education program in nanoscale science and engineering. Since January 2012, she has served as the corresponding author of 17 papers in peer-reviewed journals. She is a recipient of the 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award (2015–2018). Dr. Qin is a receipt of the GT-CETL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in 2015, with an average teaching effectiveness score at 4.65 out of 5.0. Dr. Qin’s research centers on the rational design and knowledge-based synthesis of metal nanocrystals with unique properties for applications in plasmonics, catalysis, sensing, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).     We aim to undertake our research pathway to identify the physical origin of SERS and fabricate reproducible plasmonic nanochips for biological and chemical sensing. Specifically, our fundamental studies on important parameters of SERS effect will serve as the basis to direct engineering efforts on the development of SERS as the ultrasensitive analytical platform for chemical, biological and environmental trace detection. This work connects traditional field of physical science, engineering, and life sciences, which should cultivate a synergetic research environment across disciplines and to promote inter/multidisciplinary education experience.
