About David Strickland
DAVID L. STRICKLAND, MA, MS, is the Director of the First-Year Experience Program and Professor (full) of Sociology and at East Georgia State College. Strickland holds a Master of Science degree in First-Year Studies (the terminal degree in this discipline) from Kennesaw State University and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology from Georgia Southern University. He is the author of the popular freshman orientation course textbook, College Success: A Concise Practical Guide, now in its seventh edition, and Community College Success: A Concise Practical Guide. Regarding the topic of orientation to college, Strickland credits some of his insights to the fact that he, like many of his students, is a first-generation college graduate.Strickland was a 2018-19 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research Fellow for the University System of Georgia and recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Faculty of the Year award. He has taught college full time for more than twenty years and is known as an innovator who evaluates and adopts the latest and most effective teaching strategies.He is also co-author of an introductory sociology textbook, My Sociology, which he designed around some key pedagogical principles that he uses in his classes and described in the 2013 journal article, "My Sociology: The Challenge of Transforming Classroom Culture from a Focus on Grades to a Focus on Learning" published in the Journal of Public and Professional Sociology.In addition to teaching, Strickland also served for three years as the Director of Institutional Research for EGSC and prior to teaching college, he conducted grant-funded health care research at the Center for Rural Health and Research at Georgia Southern University, served as the Director of the Georgia Clearinghouse for Child Abuse Prevention Programs and published numerous articles and chapters on the sociology of health care.

I am author of one of BVT's most popular textbooks, "College Success: A Concise Practical Guide (See https://www.bvtpublishing.com/book/824#/book/info/824/view/formats for more information) as well as some modules that may be used in other texts. I created extensive ancillaries for my text including a 200 page Instructor Guide and a video library for use in Student Success courses. I have also extensively modified one of BVT's existing sociology textbooks for use in my own classes (also used by other professors at my institution).
