The organization's flagship project analyzes climate policy lobbying, with a goal to enable our partners in the finance, NGO and progressive corporate worlds to eliminate blockages to an ambitious policy pathway globally and encourage support.

Serve on board of ITDP, a global NGO devising and implementing transport solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving urban livability, through policy and technical assistance to cities around the world, including on bus-rapid transit, pedestrianization, transit-oriented development, bike share programs, shared mobility.

Developed new corporate accountability platform to assess operational and supply chain environmental performance for thousands of companies, in partnership with watchdog NGOs and data providers. The platform was designed to enable robust engagement between retail shareholders and the assessed companies, through enhanced transparency and action road-mapping. The platform’s development phases were funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation and leading social entrepreneurs.

Advised Sir Chris Hohn of TCI Fund Management Ltd and his Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and Talos Capital Ltd, its then-$4.6bn endowment, on venture investments to accelerate the transition to low-carbon economy across commercial and industrial sectors. The advisory work was performed on long-term contract and the investment work was through a partnership agreement. Advised other foundations, high net worth individuals and emerging investment managers in the design of investment strategies intended to address barriers in the low-carbon financing ecosystem, including: a dedicated tax equity fund; a platform to deploy countertrade/defense offsets in the defense sector; a renewable Yieldco 2.0 model intended to better suit the liability-matching needs of institutional investors; a tax-efficient strategy for MLP investors to reallocate capital from midstream oil and gas into renewable energy; and an investment roadmap for World Bank on sustainable aquaculture. Advised Fortune 100 consumer companies in food and pharma sectors on brand strategy and innovation incorporating macro and other sector trends including sustainability.

Co-founded Roaring Fork Films LLC, which produced a two-season TV series on climate change, Years of Living Dangerously. Served as Executive Producer of 9-episode Season 1, which aired on Showtime in 2014 and won the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary. Co-raised ~$20m production & advertising budget and negotiated domestic and foreign distribution deals and corporate sponsorships. Continued service on Board of Directors for Season 2, which aired globally on the National Geographic Channel in 2016. Platform has evolved into The Years Project, a media hub that continues to supply short-form climate content and garners billions of impressions around the world.Co-founders of the production company were former 60 MINUTES producers Joel Bach and David Gelber. Fellow Executive Producers were James Cameron (Avatar and Titanic), Jerry Weintraub (the former head of United Artists studios) and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Season 1 featured celebrity correspondents such as Harrison Ford, Matt Damon, Jessica Alba, Don Cheadle, America Ferrera, Michael Hall, Olivia Munn and Ian Somerhalder, as well as journalists Thomas Friedman, Chris Hayes, Lesley Stahl, Mark Bittman and M. Sanjayan.

Co-founded in 2011 and raised seed and Series A funding for the formation of Flowcastings GmbH, a German-based manufacturing innovator producing complex, high-value turbine airfoils for the global aircraft engine and power generation industries. By enabling revolutionary design freedom for new blade cooling geometries, Flowcastings enabled next-generation airfoils and more fuel efficient, lower emission operation of turbines. Together with founding team, managed all aspects of the start-up’s formation, including site selection, recruitment, specification and procurement of capital equipment, development of the company's suite of process innovations and associated IP protection, marketing and securing of pilot orders. At board request, assumed Flowcastings CEO position in April 2013 and oversaw Flowcastings’ acquisition of OEM customers, commencement of product delivery; and leadership of capital raise that culminated in both a debt financing round and Series B equity round; recruited a new CEO to take over in early 2016, and upgraded other key positions on the management team. The onset of COVID-19 interrupted customer orders and a funding round, and the company ceased operations in 2020.

Served as an appointee to the Federal Advisory Committee that oversaw the activities of the third National Climate Assessment and development of its landmark report on the effects of climate change on the United States, which achieved extensive front-page coverage across the country upon its release and submission to the President of the United States in May 2014. Participated in multi-day working sessions in Washington, D.C. and at National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, CO.

Served as core member of original team at pioneering low-carbon venture/growth private equity capital firm. Co-developed the founding investment thesis and co-raised its first $336m fund. During founding phase, also supported family office Marshall Street Management in its environmentally related investment work, which preceded and incubated MissionPoint, including support of the successful Dec. 2005 IPO of portfolio company EcoSecurities Ltd, a leading worldwide carbon project developer subsequently acquired by JP Morgan. Co-led research & origination to develop investment ideas and targets, as well as supporting transaction due diligence and post-close value-add for a portfolio spanning renewable manufacturing, development and service companies, specialty materials, financing and environmental credit companies. Led MissionPoint’s public policy engagement with Federal and state programs, including multiple Congressional testimonies and briefings and provision of private counsel to the 2009 White House transition team on the clean energy provisions of the stimulus package (ARRA), including the 1603 grant program, smart grid grants and geothermal treatment in the tax grant program. The fund portfolio included investments in SunEdison, Hannon Armstrong, Upwind, Voltaix, APX, Trilliant, Upwind, EnergySource and ReCommunity.

Designed strategic initiatives to connect Yale's faculty and research on environmental management to applied decision-making contexts in the public and private sectors, including the Yale Conference on Climate Change, a 2005 multi-sectoral meeting of top leaders and thinkers. Executed foundational fund-raising and talent recruitment for ClimateCentral, which today is an influential source of information on climate change (see www.climatecentral.org). Co-conceived, raised funding and recruited leadership with Dean to launch online environmental journal "Environment 360" (www.e360.yale.edu). Authored the book "Americans and Climate Change", which received wide coverage, including a front-page, above-the-fold feature story in the New York Times’ Sunday Week in Review. Served as founding Project Director of multi-disciplinary project on environmental attitudes, decision-making and behavior at Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy. Oversaw the Yale Environmental Poll. Convened workshops on political and corporate environmental advertising.

Designed and executed strategy to rapidly expand Kaplan’s professional distance education programs in real estate licensing from six to 50 states within six months, while achieving rapid revenue growth in original states. Led the formation of the Kaplan AEC (Architecture – Engineering – Contracting) business unit by sourcing and closing the acquisition of three license prep companies, including Architectural Licensing Services; and Engineering Press (acquired from Oxford University Press). Performed valuation of product/technology synergies and other investment-related work in support of Kaplan’s $87M acquisition of Financial Training Company (FTC) in U.K. Assumed management of Kaplan University’s School of Information Technology shortly after launch; achieved rapid growth in first year by adding Bachelor’s level accreditation, accelerating faculty hiring and course offerings, licensing new curriculum, upgrading course platform and enhancing customer service.

Led business development & sales for venture capital-backed business software company that provided supply chain aggregation tools to middle market companies. Hired and managed the sales team in securing 40+ affiliates in 18 months. Initiated development of company's 2nd product, a sales automation application. The first incarnation of the company, before it shifted from a B2C to B2B business model, was ActBig, a consumer group purchasing site similar to and pre-dating Groupon. Etrana's technology assets were sold in late 2001 and it ceased operations.

Developed strategic business development screen and assisted CEO / CFO in evaluating acquisitions and equity partnerships, across publishing, direct marketing and emerging online commerce. Led valuation analysis for proposed restructuring of direct marketing divisions for internet retail. Performed valuation analysis for divestiture of Time Inc.’s parenting website to Proctor & Gamble. Completed quarterly budget reviews with operating managers; evaluated revenue and cost drivers and wrote performance enhancement recommendations to CEO.

Co-designed the $236M U.S. Environmental Technology Initiative and served as top aide to National Program Manager during investment period. Chaired team that launched burden-reduction initiatives for small business and innovative permitting alternatives to streamline business process innovation. Managed interagency synthesis reports on economic / environmental impacts of climate change. Worked with White House to produce first U.S. National Action Plan on Climate Change. Represented EPA on Trade Promotion Committee, co-wrote 1st U.S. environmental technology export policy. Served on Vice President’s “reinventing government” team to streamline EPA. Led interagency drafting of the mandate for the President’s Council on Sustainable Development. Initiated & secured Cabinet-level support for U.S. initiative promoting international phase-out of lead from gasoline, including provision of global technical assistance.

Managed project on corporate accounting and decision-making for environmental costs and risks, including on-site due diligence at production facilities of four Fortune 200 companies and negotiation of publication rights for sensitive data.

Served as lead financial affairs correspondent for New York Times Foundation-backed newspaper. Reported on global finance, climate change, and environmental negotiations before and at the U.N. Conference on Environment and Development. Served on special assignment covering the U.N. Under Secretary General’s diplomatic visits to Asia, Europe and Latin America; interviewed prime ministers, presidents and other senior officials, posting daily reports from New York City, Geneva, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and other global posts.
