I had the opportunity to learn more about the daily work of barristers and the type of work conducted by the Henderson Chamber (particularly group actions such as the ongoing Volkswagen Diesel Emissions litigation which includes over 1100 claimants). I also gained insight into the path to the bar and the atmosphere in Chambers, in particular at Henderson. I found it interesting to see how the day to day work of barristers differs from that of solicitors, as well as the importance of procedural law, compared to that of the substantive law I have studied.

Assisting in a variety of tasks including client calls, client emails, note-taking during client meetings, research to recruit a new designer, sketching on software like SpaceDesigner and Autocad, data collection, and processing for a market study (including competitors’ prices and comparing different suppliers and subcontractors). This job was a true insight into the functioning of a medium-size firm, which I believe, allowed me to develop my commercial awareness. Indeed, I took part in negotiations with our suppliers and sub-contractors. I also developed my client communication skills as I was in touch with clients on a daily basis and had to work efficiently to find a solution for them or sometimes simply reassure them while I passed their concerns onto the technical team.

I worked in a local restaurant as a waitress in their teahouse and helped as kitchen porter and assistant (cleaning and preparing vegetables, preparing the different elements for our pastries, evaluating our stocks of certain products). This job taught me how to be extremely organised and rigorous in a time-pressured environment, as keeping the kitchen tidy and clean was an essential part of the job, and as I had to work in very quickly and efficiently during peak hours.
