This period saw me join HMAS Warramunga in Singapore and act as the Deputy of the Weapons Electrical Department as it was sailed back to Perth, WA. This was was then followed by a period of preparation for the ship to proceed up the slipway to enter an upgrade period. I was able to consolidate my training by completing this role.

Under direction of the Weapons Electrical Engineer I manage the day to day operations of the Electrical Department onboard HMAS Ballarat. This covers various aspects of personnel management and working with the ships complex technical systems. This particular posting will see efforts towards bringing the ship out of an extended maintenance and upgrade period and all the requirements to have it back at sea and operational again.

Under direction of the Weapons Electrical Engineer I managed the day to day operations of the Electrical Department onboard HMAS Toowoomba. This covered all aspects of personnel management and complex technical systems that make a Naval vessel an operationally capable asset for the Australian Government.

o Worked as the Commonwealth Representative integral to projects relating to all the systems in the Communications Centre on board the Collins Class Submarines. o Stakeholder management during projects included representatives from Raytheon, Thales and Boeing.o Responsible to the Director of Submarine Engineering for installation oversight and change management of projects including the safety critical Internal Communication Systems upgrade and the modernised communications antenna across the fleet.o Monitored and managed engineering contracts, quality assurance, non-compliances and corrective actions within my engineering delegation. This work included projects of value up to $5 million.o Verified and validated work at contractual hold points by participating in test and evaluation procedures, preliminary and critical design reviews, reviewing and editing change proposal documentation and ensuring compliance with submarine safety.o Applied capability lifecycle and Reliability Availability Maintainability methodology to apply required functions of logistics support. * o A role which saw a variety of tasks and deployments during which my goal was to achieve all the learning requirements to be an engineer on a naval vessel. o Completed tasks that involved complex emergencies to drive the survivability of the vessel at sea and alongside.o Managed munitions and applied regulatory requirements for storage, accounting and handling. This included the planning and execution of the loading/unloading of guided and non-guided ammunition for tasks derived by the Government. o Professional and personal mentor for 15 subordinates within the engineering department. o Led a team of 10 sailors to intercept foreign vessels and make critical decisions on the safety of my team and up to 200 personnel of unknown origin. These tasks involved the ability to lead, negotiate with, and influence people under my command as well as complete strangers with unknown motives. Show less

* o Maintainer and operator of extremely complex electronics systems that ensured macro and micro envelope protection of RAN vessels utilising RADAR and weapons platforms integrated into a whole of ship network.o Managed up to 10 subordinates to keep systems online and at optimal performance throughout multiple deployments of extended time (up to 6 months) around Australia, South East Asia and the Middle East. o Selected to represent the Australian Defence Force on a 13 month long residential course in San Diego, USA. I transferred from being a Technical Sailor after 10 years in the RAN to a Naval Engineering Officer in 2008. This process saw me successfully conduct testing and selection boards in order to changeover to officer. I then studied at RMIT from 2008 to 2011 completing my Bachelor of Electrical/Electronic Engineering.o 1st Class Honours with courses covering a range of electrical and electronic disciplines. o Fourth year thesis based on micromechanical systems and the fabrication of these using photolithography on the nanoscale. o My thesis enabled me to undertake extensive review of peer-reviewed literature, cleanroom fabrication, develop rigorous processes for micro-fabrication of flexible devices and electrical and electro-mechanical characterisation of micro-devices. o My final paper on the use of piezoelectric thin films for energy harvesting was presented in 2011 at the Melbourne conference for the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) and has been cited multiple times in ongoing research in this field. As the WEEO at NESC Stirling I deliver the ASMD Combat Systems Course to WEEOs, DWEEOs and CPOETs from the Navy with the intent of teaching them an overall systems view of all Weapons Electrical Systems onboard ANZAC Class Ships. Ultimately they will be able to understand the systems and the impact of defects and issues that affect the ship in a variety of scenarios. I am also responsible to the OIC NESC for all Weapons Electrical Systems at the school and their upkeep throughout the year. This includes dealing with contractors and Defence personnel to achieve the best outcome to keep the training pipeline active for the Navy. Extra roles whilst at NESC include the Unit Security Officer responsible for all elements of the security in a highly sensitive building and Divisional Officer for Warrant Officers.

* Working in Halifax, Nova Scotia as part of a world class team of Engineers and Project Managers brought together to build world class ships for Canada.
