Since its foundation in 1952, the Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden (IHD) has been dealing with application-oriented research into the use of timber as a resource, its processing into materials and finished products made thereof. Its research activities are traditionally accompanied by developing appropriate test methodologies, consultancy and further training. Following its privatisation in 1992, the IHD has been operating as a non-profit-making limited liability entity. Its sole shareholder is the "Trägerverein Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden e.V.", whose current membership includes more than 90 renowned businesses, associations and institutions of the German timber industry. With its approximately 130 members of staff and state-of-the-art experimental fields and laboratories, the IHD has all the prerequisites for conducting widely varied wood-technological research. The handling of test assignments and services for the industry and trade is the predominant task of the Entwicklungs- und Prüflabor Holztechnologie (EPH), a subsidiary of the IHD on the same premises. The institute understands itself as a partner of medium-sized businesses in the wood business, furniture industry and related industrial sectors, and maintains international contacts with corresponding scientific facilities.
